"The most important
thing I won't forget is your serenity and the smile in your face
no matter what, showing that you understand, and adding a positive
environment in my room." Louise Ngo Dicum
What is the difference between a midwife
and a doula?
A midwife is responsible for the clinical aspects
of care for you and your baby. A doula provides informational,
emotional and physical support during labour, birth and postpartum.
Can I have a doula if I give birth at the
hospital?
Absolutely. Most hospitals allow two support persons
and staff welcome the help and recognize the benefits of good
labour support.
Are doulas only for women who want natural
childbirth?
No. Every woman deserves and needs support, whether
or not she uses medication. There is no right way to give birth.
It is your birth and your choice.
What is your philosophy of birth, and supporting
women and their partners?
I believe birth is a wonderful experience that empowers
women and their partners. It is an important event and should
be treated with dignity, respect and caring. Women remember their
birth experience for the rest of their lives, so it is important
that it is as positive an experience as possible. I believe birth
is a natural process and believe in a woman's ability to give
birth. I understand, however, that there is a time and a place
for interventions. I support your choices, even if they are different
from my own. I do not take the place of your partner, but help
him/her support you and take away the pressure to know what to
do and when, so he/she can concentrate on loving you!
When do you join us in labour?
I ask that you contact me as soon as you think you
are in labour so I can make arrangements to be with you. I will
arrive at your home or the hospital whenever you need me, and
stay with you until an hour or so after the birth.
Do you have a back-up doula?
I arrange for back-up services for any dates/times that I am unavailable,
or in the event of a personal emergency. I will provide you with
her name and contact information.
Will you help us if we have a cesarean birth?
Most certainly. I can provide you with some information
on cesarean births pre-natally, if you wish. I will accompany
you in the operating room in the event your partner is unable
or uncomfortable doing so, dependent on the hospital's regulations.
In any case I will be your advocate and remain in the hospital
during that time. I will provide informational and emotional support
to you and your partner, assist you with breastfeeding and ensure
that you and partner are both comfortable.
What locations do you serve?
I serve the following areas: Guelph/Fergus,
Kitchener-Waterloo, Cambridge, Milton, Hamilton/Burlington.
